نويسنده ابتدا خطوط اصلي شكل گيري تاريخي نثر فارسي را به صورت فشرده بيان كرده و دگرگوني چشمگيري را كه در شيوه ي نثر نويسي در دوره ي جديد روي داده است، بررسي نموده است. او پس از نگاهي كلي به پيش زمينه ي نثر فارسي، دوران جديد را با بررسي سال هاي اوليه ي قاجار و دوره ي پيش از مشروطيت آغاز كرده است.
