Calligraphy and manuscript writing are valuable topics of Iranian-Islamic culture and civilization that have their roots in pre-Islamic civilizations. کتابت و نسخه‌نویسی از مباحث ارزشمند فرهنگ و تمدن ایرانی _ اسلامی است که ریشه در تمدن‌های پیش از اسلام دارد. با نگاهی به نسخه‌های خطی متون قدیم و بررسی تاریخ تحریر آنها می‌توان دریافت، نسخه‌نویسی از قرن سوم و چهارم هجری آغاز شده و تا دوره متاخر ادامه داشته است. ازسویی، کتاب‌آرایی یک هنر مستقل به‌شمار نمی‌آید بلکه تلفیقی از هنر هنرمندان خطاط، صحاف، مذهبان و تصویرگران است که با هنرمندی بر صفحه‌ها و جلدها، زیباترین نقش‌ها و رنگ‌ها را ترسیم کرده و اندیشه را تجسم بخشیده‌اند. در این کتاب به تاریخ کتابت، کتاب‌سازی و کتاب‌آرایی برای نمایش گوشه‌ای از تمدن درخشان ایران پرداخته شده است.
