The oldest and most powerful human emotion is fear, and the oldest and most powerful human fear is fear of the unknown. Fear was the most important factor in the discovery of fire and the invention of religion. By drawing fear, we are actually preparing the ground for coping with real fear in our existence. The fear that in many cases originates neither from imaginary monsters nor from the devil who seeks to conquer the human soul, but from the fear of man against man and the individual's fear of society. In the same way, for the story to be scary, there is no need for the presence of giants, vampires, monsters, or spilling liters of blood and butchery. A horror story can simply describe the hallucinations of an ordinary person in a desolate, dark place, and generally a place that has potential scare-generating capabilities. In choosing the stories of this collection, we have tried to select works that introduce examples of these different trends to the reader. For example, the stories "Partnership" and "William and Mary" are examples of the use of grotesque (bitter humor). "Yellow Wall Paper" is an excuse for its author to deal with issues of gender discrimination and feminism in the form of a scary surreal work. "Men of the Sloane Family" is an example of the intersection of fantasy and horror with the seasoning of women's issues and problems.
