How I shot an elephant brings together an amount of literary essays that give readers a comprehensive insight into George Orwell's life and work. Some attempts, such as "A Sketch Execution," or "How I Shook an Elephant," describe intimations from the time spent by the writer in the colonies as an employee of the Imperial Imperial Police; others, such as "The Night Asylum" or "La zdup", are experiencing the experiences of the years of poverty that Orwell imposed upon his return from Burma. But most of them are subject to the details of the life of Londoners during the Second World War - from bombardment or rationalization of food to the English cuisine or the art of preparing good tea - and the disastrous internal and external politics of the various governments - they succeeded in this period.

Cum am impuscat un elefant reuneste o suma de eseuri literare ce ofera cititorilor o perspectiva cuprinzatoare asupra vietii si operei lui George Orwell. Unele incercari, precum „O executie prin spinzurare” sau „Cum am impuscat un elefant”, descriu intimplari din perioada petrecuta de scriitor in colonii, ca angajat al Politiei Imperiale Indiene; altele, precum „Azilul de noapte” sau „La zdup”, reiau experiente din anii de saracie pe care Orwell si i-a impus dupa intoarcerea din Birmania. Dar cele mai multe au drept subiect detalii ale vietii londonezilor in timpul celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial – de la bombardamente sau rationalizarea alimentelor la bucataria englezeasca sau arta de a pregati un ceai bun – si politica interna si externa dezastruoasa a diferitelor guverne care s-au succedat in aceasta perioada.
