We live in an age of economics. We are encouraged not only to think of our work but also of our lives in economic terms. In many of our practices, we are told that we are consumers and entrepreneurs. این کتاب درباره‌ی این است که ما در رویارویی با خودمان و با دیگران چه کسی هستیم. نولیبرالیسم نقش بسیاری در ساختن کسی که امروز هستیم داشته است. نمی‌توان نولیبرالیسم را صرفاً یک آموزه‌ی اقتصادی یا حتی مشتی روّیه‌ی اقتصادی دانست. زیستن در محدوده‌ی نولیبرالیسم، نولیبرالیسمی که دست‌کم برای سی چهل سال ما را آموخته کرده، یعنی غرقه‌شدن در مجموعه‌ای از شرایط، که محال است بر نحوه‌ی تفکر و احساس ما اثر نگذاشته باشد. اگر می‌خواهیم سویه‌ی مهمی را از کسی که هستیم بفهمیم و از دشواری و چه‌بسا حتی سیاه‌روزی آنچه از ما می‌خواهند باشیم سردرآوریم، آنگاه باید با نولیبرالیسم دست‌وپنجه نرم کنیم. می‌خواهیم بدانیم نولیبرالیسم چه فیگورهایی می‌آفریند، و ترغیبمان می‌کند چه‌طور زندگی کنیم.
