Inherent Vice is a postmodern detective novel by Thomas Pynchon, first published in 2009. Set in Los Angeles in 1970, it follows Larry “Doc” Sportello, a stoner private investigator navigating a psychedelic maze of conspiracy, paranoia, and cultural decay. The novel’s layered critique of American society, capitalist corruption, and existential absurdity.
