Thought and the Moving is the last book published by Bergson, in 1934, at the age of almost 75; and yet, in it, he expresses with renewed surprise, as if it had just occurred to him, his most original intuition (and this, from the very title). It is a book which is therefore animated by a single idea, a unity perhaps stronger than ever; and yet, it is first and foremost a collection of essays (the second after Spiritual Energy of 1919), each of which (even more so than in the previous one) is worth a decisive work in its own right, some of which (like the Introduction to Metaphysics) have already left their mark on their time, and which, finally, are not linked together only by this unity of principle, but also by tensions, no less profound. Thus Bergson tightens up his thought or his intuition even more than ever, taking it directly, for the first time, as an object. He even apparently restricts the scope of this collection, by limiting it, in the Foreword, to a retrospective reflection on his "method". But this ultimate concentration is also, as we see, an ultimate broadening.
