ناصر خسرو مرد آرمان‌خواه پاک‌باخته‌ای است که در جامعه‌ای عافیت‌اندیش و منفعل و ترس‌خورده و آلوده به انواع ظلم و فساد کوشیده است راهی یکسره مخالف پسند زمانه در پیش گیرد. در آستانه‌ی پیری که نیاز به ثبات و آرامش معمولاً آدم‌ها را محافظه‌کارتر می‌کند، او از زندگی بی‌دغدغه و آسوده‌ای که می‌توانست در شهر آباد و زیبای بلخ و در میان خانواده و دوستانش داشته باشد روی برمی‌گرداند و به دنبال آرمانی بلند، که نویدبخش رهایی انسان بود، به دامان دره‌ای تنگ و دورافتاده در حصار کوه‌هایی سر به فلک کشیده پناه می‌برد. چنین کسی البته، وقتی با خیل مردمان آزمند یا مرعوب روزگارش مواجه می‌شود، حق دارد که بر آن‌ها و راه و رسم برده‌وارشان بشورد و خود را بسی فراتر از ایشان ببیند. ناصر خسرو را می‌توان، به تعبیر امروزی، اومانیستی دانست که انسان را مرکز و محور خلقت الاهی و از این رو صاحب آزادی و اختیار و مسئولیت کامل در قبال سرنوشتش می‌بیند و هیچ عذر و بهانه‌ای را برای گریز از این آزادی و مسئولیت نمی‌پذیرد.
