“1875: at fifty-three years old, Gustave Flaubert considers himself a finished man. Threatened with financial ruin, overwhelmed with sorrow, incapable of writing, he wishes he was dead. He decides to spend the fall in Concarneau, where a scientist friend of his runs the marine biology station. می‌خواهد روایت داستانی را که در سر دارد به دست نور بسپارد یا با کلمات تعریفش کند؟ جزئیات تاریخی، صحت باستان‌شناسی، این‌ها همه مسائل ثانویه‌اند و برای خلق زیبایی کفایت نمی‌کنند. حتی گاهی از مسیر اصلی منحرفش می‌کنند. این همان چیزی‌ست که زولا و سایر نویسنده‌های مکتب جدید، به خاطر علاقه‌ی بیش از حد مستندسازی و اهمیت دادن به واقعیت صرف از آن غافل شده‌اند. فلوبر می‌داند با چه پیوندهای صمیمانه‌ای زیبایی را با واقعیت گره بزند. در حالتی بین نشستن و دراز کشیدن، پاهایش را روی هم انداخته و در خیال خود، از لابه‌لای پرده‌ی تور، درخشش ایده‌ی مطلوب را به چشم می‌بیند.
