جان لاینز (John Lyons) (متولد ۲۳ مه ۱۹۳۲ در استرتفورد، لانکاشایر – درگذشته ۱۲ مارس ۲۰۲۰) زبان‌شناس انگلیسی بود. معروفترین کارهای وی در معناشناسی است. جان لاینز در استرتفورد، لنکاوی (اکنون در ترافورد) به دنیا آمد و بزرگ شد. او ابتدا در مدرسه St Ann's RC ، Stretford تحصیل کرد ، قبل از اینکه بورس تحصیلی خود را به کالج St Bede's ، منچستر بدست آورد، در سپتامبر 1943 ملحق شود. در جولای 1950، لیونز به کالج مسیح در کمبریج راه یافت، و در آنجا در سال 1953 در رشته کلاسیک و دیپلم آموزش در سال 1954 مدرک گرفت.
