Henri Robin, a special agent of the French secret service, arrives in the ruined city and feels linked to it by a vague and recurrent memory. انتشار رمان جام شکسته در اکتبر 2001 از جمله رویدادهای مهم ادبی آن سال در فرانسه بود. آلن رب گری یه این کتاب را در آستانه ی هشتادسالگی و پس از هشت سال سکوت منتشر کرد. این رمان دربرگیرنده ی عناصر بسیاری از رمان های پیشین اوست. رب گری یه فرم پلیسی را برای رمان هایش انتخاب کرده است. وجود معما در رمان های پلیسی با شکل معمایی آثار او همخوانی دارد؛ نپرداختن به شخصیت افراد و شناخت آن ها از طریق دیالوگ و رفتار، ایجاد تردید در خواننده و تعلیق در داستان از ویژگی ژانر پلیسی است که رب گری یه در رمان های خود به کار می برد. او با ایجاد انتظار، تردید و هراس در خواننده او را در حالتی ر رمز و راز فرو می برد.
