The book of the social contract is one of the most important and influential works ever written in political philosophy. Since its publication in 1762, this book has enthused, enraged, offended, inspired, and frustrated its audience in equal measure. The Social Contract, although relatively concise and well-written, is not an easy book to understand. Despite Rousseau's rhetorical skills and his talent for creating memorable phrases, the ideas he discussed are deep and mysterious ideas. Rousseau's central issue is the proper place of the individual in society and, in particular, how political institutions can best be organized for the flourishing of citizens and their prosperity.
