In this book, the amount of interest that some high-ranking American writers showed in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Eastern mysticism in general and Iranian Sufism, in particular, has been discussed in this book. Such research is important not only from a historical point of view but also from the point of view that it shows the distinction between popular Sufism and literary and academic activities that a number of American writers have devoted to Iran's Sufism.

در این کتاب به بیان کمّ و کیف علاقۀ فراوانی پرداخته شده که برخی از ادیبان بلندپایۀ آمریکایی، در قرن‌های نوزدهم و اوایل بیستم، به عرفان شرق در مجموع و تصوف ایرانی به‌خصوص پیردا کردند. چنین تحقیقی نه‌تنها از دیدگاه تاریخی، بلکه از این منظر نیز شایان اهمیت است که تمایز صوفی‌گری عامیانه را با فعالیت‌های ادیبانه و دانشگاهی نشان می‌دهد که شماری از ادبای آمریکایی دربارۀ تصوف ایران به آن همت مبذول کرده‌اند.
