كوجيكي كتابي است كه درباره آفرينش زمين و آسمان، خدايان متعدد، آداب و رسوم مذهبي، مرگ و ديار مردگان، خوبي ها و شرارت ها و مطالب بسيار ديگري سخن گفته است. در لابه لاي آن اشعار بسياري وجود دارد كه به اساطير كهن ژاپني باز مي گردد. از سويي ديگر اين كتاب، در حقيقت "شاهنامه" ژاپني هاست كه به سرگذشت امپراتوران متعدد ژاپن و پهلوانان آن ها مي پردازد.
