تنفتح الرواية عام ١٩٠٦ في نيويورك، في منزل أسرة أمريكية موسِرَة. خلال ظهيرة يوم أحد كسول، يطرق بابها فنّان الافتكاك الشّهير هوديني على إثر تعطّل سيارته على الشارع قبالة منزلها. وهكذا يبدأ دوكتُرو تقديم أوّل حبل ضفَره بخيوط واقعية وخيالية، ما حدث وما لم يحدث. يدفع بشخصيات واقعية في حياة هذه الأسرة المتخيّلة كاشفًا عن الصّراعات التي توجّه حيوات الناس في ذاك الزمن؛ يأتي بفرويد، وإلهة الجمال إيفلين، وقائد الثورة المكسيكيّة زاباتا، وغيرهم، راسمًا لشخصياته المتخيلة دروبًا تنفتح بسببهم، وأخرى تنغلق.
