فرناندو پسو، شاعر بزرگ پرتغال، معتقد بود «من»های بسیاری در او هست. یکی از این «من»هایش دکتر ریکاردو ریش بود؛ پزشکی که نه ماه بزرگ‌تر از خود پسوا بوده! ساراماگو در این رمانش این ریکاردو ریش را به چنان شخصیتی تبدیل می‌کند که واقعی‌تر از هر شخصیت واقعی می‌شود. او تصویر بسیار زنده‌ای از اوضاع سیاسی در دهه‌ی ۱۹۳۰ و ظهور فاشیسم را هم در قالب این رمان به نمایش می‌گذارد؛ رمانی که بدون شک شاعرانه‌ترین و با تکنیک‌ترین رمانی است که او نوشت.
