In so modestly brief a volume, it is something of a surprise to find such a comprehensive survey of psychoanalysis. The text proper, organized in terms of developmental stages, is a clear and unbiased statement of the analysts' theories. Blum supports his thesis that psychoanalytic views provide the most promising present basis for a theory of personality, but that these views need to be sorted out, evaluated by research, and progressively refined.
