The main purpose of this book is to examine and analyze the social and personal lives of the scholars and figures who contributed to the compilation of the Talmud, as well as the formation of the Mishnah (part of the Oral Torah). This study begins with the time of Ezra the scribe and ends shortly after Rabbi Judah Hannassi. By studying this book, various and interesting aspects of Jewish history, the lives of the great men, as well as their personality traits, are revealed to us.

هدف اصلی این کتاب، بررسی و تحلیل زندگی اجتماعی و شخصی دانشمندان و چهره‌هایی که در تدوین تلمود نقش داشته‌اند، و همچنین نحوهٔ شکل‌گیری میشنا (بخشی از تورات شفاهی) می‌باشد. این بررسی از دورهٔ عزرای کاتب آغاز شده و به دورهٔ کوتاهی پس از ربّی یهودا هنّاسی ختم می‌شود. با مطالعهٔ این کتاب ابعاد گوناگون و جالبی از تاریخ یهود، زندگی بزرگان و همچنین ویژگی‌های شخصیتی آن‌ها برای ما روشن می‌شود.
