Shinto, the indigenous religion of the Japanese people, is relatively unknown among the world's religions. The Japanese people have long believed in and worshipped "kami." Shinto means "the way of the kami." Unlike Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, Shinto has no founder or holy book. In its aspects, Shinto involves belief in the kami, traditions by the mind and spirit of the kami, and the spiritual life achieved through worship of the kami and in union with him. In its universal aspect, Shinto is more than a religious belief and is a combination of spirits and attitudes, ideas, and ways of doing things that have become a major part of the way of the Japanese people for two thousand years or more. In this book, the author explains Shintoism and its customs.

"شینتو"، دین بومی مردم ژاپن، در بین ادیان جهان نسبتا ناشناخته است. مردم ژاپن از دیرباز تاکنون، «کامی» را باور داشته و پرستیده‌اند. شینتو به معنای «راه و طریقۀ کامی» است. دین شینتویی برخلاف ادیان بودایی، مسیحیت و اسلام بنیانگذار و کتاب مقدس ندارد. شینتو در وجوه شخصی آن، متضمن ایمان به کامی، سنت‌هایی مطابق با فکر و ذهن کامی و حیاتی معنوی است که از طریق پرستش کامی و در اتحاد با او به دست می‌آید. شنیتو در وجه عالم خود، بیش از یک اعتقاد دینی و در واقع ترکیبی از روحیات و نگرش‌ها، ایده‌ها و روش‌های انجام امور است که در خلال دو هزار سال، بلکه بیش‌تر، به صورت بخش اصلی راه و طریقۀ مردم ژاپن در آمده است. نگارنده در کتاب حاضر به شرح و تبیین شینوئیزم و آداب و رسوم آن می‌پردازد.
