The Milky Way galaxy is a spiral-bar galaxy with a length of about 150 to 200 thousand light years. The Milky Way is one of the largest members of a galaxy cluster called the Local Group, which is on a collision course with the Andromeda Galaxy. There are about 30 galaxies in this galaxy cluster. The local group belongs to the Spire supercluster with a diameter of 110 million light years, which also belongs to the Laniakia supercluster with a diameter of 520 million years.

کهکشان راه شیری کهکشانی مارپیچی- میله ای با طولی در حدود یک صد و پنجاه تا دویست هزار سال نوری میباشد. راه شیری یکی از بزرگترین اعضای یک خوشه کهکشانی به نام گروه محلی است که در مسیر برخورد با کهکشان آندرومدا در حال حرکت است. در این خوشه کهکشانی چیزی در حدود سی کهکشان قرار دارد گروه محلی خود متعلق به ابرخوشه سنبله با ۱۱۰ میلیون سال نوری قطر میباشد که آن نیز متعلق به ابرخوشه لانیاکیا با ۵۲۰ میلیون سال قطر می باشد.
