Atropaten is the Greek name of a kingdom that was established at the end of the 4th century (AD) in Azerbaijan and Kurdistan of Iran and part of the present Republic of Azerbaijan and continued to exist for more than three hundred years. Atropaten was a rich and powerful country where agriculture, animal husbandry and trade flourished and urbanization was developed in its prosperous cities. Atropaten maintained its independence not only throughout the Macedonian conquest of the East, but also during the Seleucid era. The kings of the Atropaten regime were both victors and vanquished in war with their neighbors, but they stood with all their might against the foreign aggressors. In addition to communicating with far and near countries, they established kinship relations with Macedonian, Parthian, Syrian and Armenian Greek princes. Atropaten kings were also respected in Rome and Egypt. The influence of Atropaten and its inhabitants on their neighbors has been remarkable. The period of existence of Atropaten is considered an important stage in the history of Azerbaijan.
