در کتاب پیش رو قرار نیست برمبنای چارچوبی زبان‌شناختی یا معرفت‌شناختی به صحت و سقم ترجمه‌ها پرداخته شود تا سرانجام فهرستی از مترجمان خوب و بد فراهم آید. پس اگر از خیانت در ترجمه سخن رانده می‌شود مسئله عدم‌وفاداری به کلمه یا زبانِ مبدأ نیست، بلکه مسئله بر سر مختل‌کردن یک امکان است و اگر از اخلاق یا اتیک در ترجمه سخن به میان می‌آید دقیقاً در همین برداشتِ متفاوت از وفاداری و خیانت است که این اخلاق معنا می‌یابد. این جستار با بیرون آمدن از حلقه‌ی تنگ و کم‌ثمرِ رهیافت‌های زبان‌شناختی و با اتخاذ رویکردی فلسفی‌ـ‌سیاسی در پی آن است که ببیند چگونه رویدادهای تاریخی در برهه‌های متفاوت بر نمودار سیاست، ادبیات و ترجمه اثر می‌گذارند و در این میان کدامین نیرو میدانِ ترجمه را به تسخیرِ خود درمی‌آورد و چگونه؟
