This brilliant narrative tells a part of Iran's history from the beginning of Reza Shah's era to the 1957 revolution and eight years of war and emigration from Iran. The pretext of the narration is a ten-page note of Ruhi Shafii's mother, which was found after her death, and it seems that this becomes the basis for the author to start narrating memories and move softly and sweetly between the documentary events with a story-telling language.
Although the book "Gates of Civilization" is not a story, the character of the narrator is not something to be overlooked, because the narrator is not just a reporter's voice. He doesn't just write history and doesn't show prejudice. A world-viewing, knowledgeable and lovable narrator who is not pretentious; And today, when we need to know about the past more than ever, what is better than reading such a book that takes us to the past, to the pages that are woven with joy and sadness. To the Iranian who was, to the dreams that were lost, and of course, with hope for the dreams that will come true!

این روایت درخشان، بخشی از تاریخ ایران از اوایل دوران رضا شاه تا انقلاب ۵۷ و هشت سال جنگ و مهاجرت از ایران را در دل خاطرات بیان می‌کند. بهانه‌ی روایت، يادداشتی ده صفحه‌ای از مادر روحی شفیعی است که پس از درگذشتش پیدا می‌شود و انگار همین زمینه‌ای می‌شود تا نویسنده نقل خاطراتی را آغاز کند و به نرمی و شیرینی با زبانی قصه‌گو میان اتفاقات مستند در حرکت باشد.
با این که کتاب «دروازه‌های تمدن» داستانی نیست اما شخصیت راوی چیزی نیست که بشود از آن گذشت، چرا که راوی تنها یک صدای گزارشگر نیست. او صرفا تاریخ‌نویسی نمی‌کند و تعصبی از خود نشان نمی‌دهد. راویِ جهان‌دیده، آگاه و دوست‌داشتنی که پرمدعا نیست؛ و امروز که بیش از پیش نیاز داریم از گذشته بدانیم، چه بهتر از خواندن چنین کتابی که ما را به گذشته ببرد، به صفحاتی که با شادی و اندوه تنیده شده است. به ایرانی که بود، به رویاهایی که از دست رفت و البته با امید به رویاهایی که به حقیقت خواهد پیوست!
