The novel is the ideal conclusion of what Camon entitled "the cycle of the last", in which a peasant world that has always been immobile lives again in its misery and greatness. From this earthly matrix the author now arrives, through the transfiguration of love, the mediation of memory and the virtue of poetry, to a feeling of immortality which finds its symbol and sign in the copper altar built for his mother. It is the father who erects it, but it is the son who records its birth, in turn building an "altar of words", the book, which will allow the mother to "stop dying". A very sweet testimony of love, this is a novel that can be read and felt on different levels, but which above all involves with an intense religiosity of a Tolstoyan tone. A compact and very tense writing, epic and elegiac, gives the book the severe unity of the remaining works.
