In the 15th and 16th centuries, Italy was a collection of small republics and city-states. The republics had control over the central cities and their surrounding suburbs. Among them were Florence, Genoa, and Venice; Each of them had its own rulers, nobles, peasants, merchants, priests, and civil servants. Michelangelo was born in such circumstances. He was an artist belonging to the Renaissance period in every sense, and he carved sculptures so beautifully that the stones seemed alive. Michelangelo also designed several mansions and public squares in his hometown in Italy and built walls, but he became famous with the statue of Mourning Mary and the famous statue of David, which are made of huge marble. The design that has kept Michelangelo's memory alive in people's minds is the design that he was less interested in than his other designs: the painting of the Sistine Chapel building. In 1999, when Pope John Paul II reopened this chapel, he said: "These works of art are still full of mystery in a language that will never become old."
