The book "Fire from Heaven" is a historical novel written by Mary Reno in 1969 about the childhood and youth of Alexander the Great. It was reportedly the main inspiration for Oliver Stone's film Alexander. Alexander's beauty, strength, and defiance were evident from birth, but his childhood turned these gifts into a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty and taught Alexander politics and revenge from the cradle. His love for the youth of Hephaistion gave him confidence, while Aristotle's teaching stirred his mind and Homer's Iliad fueled his aspirations. Killing his first man in battle at the age of twelve, he became regent at sixteen and commander of the Macedonian cavalry at eighteen, so that by the time his father was killed, Alexander's skills had grown as much as his fiery ambition. Marie Renault, known as Mary Renault, was an English writer, best known for her historical novels set in ancient Greece. He was born in Forestgate in 1905 and studied at St Hugh's College, Oxford from 1924 to 1928. After graduating from St. Hugh's, she worked as a nurse and began writing her first contemporary novels. Reno's works are often rooted in themes related to love, and sexuality. His books attracted a large gay following at the time of publication when few mainstream works portrayed homosexuality in a positive light. His works have been generally well-received by critics. He has received numerous awards and honors both during his lifetime and after his death.
