توجه امروزی فعالان در حوزه های اجتماعی و سیاسی کشورهای در حال توسعه به سوسیال دموکراسی از جمله در نتیجه فشارهای نهادهای اقتصادی و مالی بین المللی به همه کشورهاست برای پذیرش الزامات جهانی شدن که گفته می شود جز از طریق اتخاذ الگوی اقتصاد بازار صورت نخواهد پذیرفت. پذیرشی که با اقتدار گرایی از سویی و کمرنگ شدن گفتمان برابری و حقوق اجتماعی در سوی دیگر همراه بوده است. مقابله با این وضعیت، سیاستگذاری، سوسیال دموکراتیک یعنی سیاستگذاری به نفع برنامه های اجتماعی فراگیر و ایجاد چترهای حمایتی گسترده برای آحاد ملت را که از زمینه های چشم ناپوشیدنی همبستگی ملی به شمار می روند به ضرورت تبدیل کرده است.
