Tintin, intrigued by the appearance of a new star, goes to the observatory. There he meets Professor Calys who reveals to him the nature of this star: it is a gigantic meteorite heading towards the Earth to cause the end of the world there... Fortunately, the meteorite avoids Earth, but a fragment falls into the Arctic Ocean. Professor Calys discovers the presence of an element still unknown there and decides to organize an expedition with Tintin and Captain Haddock... But they are not the only ones interested in this new element, soon they will undergo sabotage attempts and attacks from another expedition, also part, in search of this mysterious star...
