The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth is a Bildungsroman by Hermann Hesse, first published in 1919; a prologue was added in 1960. Demian was first published under the pseudonym "Emil Sinclair", the name of the narrator of the story, but Hesse was later revealed to be the author. Emil Sinclair is a young boy who was raised in a middle class home, amidst what is described as a Scheinwelt, a play on words meaning "world of light" as well as "world of illusion". Sinclair's entire existence can be summarized as a struggle between two worlds: the show world of illusion (related to the Hindu concept of maya) and the real world, the world of spiritual truth. In the course of the novel, Sinclair is caught between good and evil, represented as the light and dark realms. Accompanied and prompted by his mysterious classmate and friend 'Max Demian', he detaches from and revolts against the superficial ideals of the world of appearances and eventually awakens into a realization of self.

دمیان یکی از مهم‌ ترین کتاب ‎های کارنامه‌ ی ادبی هرمان هسه، نویسنده‌ ی نامدار آلمانی است. هسه که در سال ۱۹۴۶ برنده‌ ی نوبل ادبی نیز شده است کتاب دمیان را بلا فاصله پس از جنگ جهانی اول نوشت؛ کتابی که می‌ توان آن را آینه‌ ی تمام نمای اندیشه‌ ی هسه دانست. رمانتیسم آلمانی، عرفان و شرق‌ گرایی، آثار و اندیشه‌ های نیچه و یونگ و همچنین زمانه‌ ای که اثر در آن به نگارش در آمده است،‌ از مضامین اثرگذار در کتاب دمیان بوده‌ اند. قسمتی از کتاب: خودم را مانند تبهکاری یافتم که به سبب دزدی تکه نانی محاکمه‌ اش کنند،‌ حال آنکه او مرتکب قتل شده باشد. احساسی بود نفرت‌ انگیز و ناجور،‌ اما قوی و به شدت گیرا که مرا محکم‌ تر از دیگر اندیشه‌ ها به راز و گناهم گره می‌زد. فکر کردم شاید اکنون دیگر کرومر نزد پاسبان رفته و مرا لو داده باشد و در همان حال که اینجا مرا به چشم بچه‌ ای کوچک می‎ نگرند،‌ توفان بر فراز سرم در حال تکوین باشد.
