Simenon, who had long distanced himself from the cinematic future of his work, confided at the end of his life that he would have dreamed of seeing this novel adapted for the screen, with Charles Aznavour in the lead role. For the moment, no director has yet dared to take on the challenge. Yet he is truly Simenon. The story is, as is often the case, universal and timeless, even though it is contemporary with his writing (1956) and the author sets it in a small town in Berry. Two main characters: Jonathan Milk, 40, a French bookseller and philatelist originally from Russia, and his wife, the seductive Gina Palestri, 24. A couple without children after two years of marriage. He suspects that she is cheating on him but doesn't reproach her. Until the day she disappears, taking rare stamps with her.
