اين كتاب مشتمل بر دو داستان بلند است كه با مضمون اخلاقي است. در داستان پول با عنوان "كوپن تقلبي"، نويسنده ماجراي شرارتي را پي مي گيرد كه با جعل مقداري سند بهادار روسيه تزاري به دست نوجواني معصوم، آغاز مي شود. اين داستان با متحول شدن "استپان" قهرمان اصلي داستان كه قاتل چندين تن است در هم مي شكند و نيكي آغاز مي شود و استپان به قديسي مسيحي تبديل مي شود.
