Jan Janszoon Struys, a Dutch sailor, was working in the Russian Tsar's fleet in the Caspian Sea; but due to the Cossack rebellion, he fled to Iran and was captured by the Tatars on the borders of Iran and sold into slavery in Iran. He spent two years of his life in Iran, during which time he was a slave to two Iranian merchants, and for a while, he stayed in the house of the Polish ambassador until the Dutch East India Company rescued him from slavery and he left Iran. His travelogue is about his adventures, memories, and travels in Iran during the reign of Shah Suleiman the Safavid and provides valuable information about the conditions of slaves, the lifestyle of the people, and the social and economic conditions of Iran during the Safavid era - especially the northern and northwestern regions of Iran and the cities and villages along his journey from Shamakhi to Bandar Abbas.
