پیشینه‌ی چندهزارساله‌ی جاده‌ی ابریشم و استفاده‌ی مدام از ظرفیت حمل کالا از استان «توان هانگ» چین تا قلب اروپا در بازه‌ی زمانی قریب به دو هزار سال، ثابت‌کننده‌ی نیازی‌ست که انسان‌ها از شرق تا غرب به همدیگر داشته‌اند و همواره در پی رسیدن به تازه‌ها و به دست آوردن مایحتاج‌شان حتی به قیمت پیمودن راه‌های بسیار بسیار طولانی بوده‌اند. البته شگفت‌انگیزی راه ابریشم که اولین بار ریختوفن آلمانی از نیمه‌ی دوم قرن نوزدهم از این نام در نوشته‌هایش استفاده کرد، فقط به خاطر گسترش بازرگانی و جهانگردی از خاور دور تا قاره‌ی سبز نبود، بلکه تبادل فرهنگی عظیمی بود که بی‌شک بدون این راه، به این سادگی‌ها ممکن نمی‌شد؛ تبادل فرهنگی‌ای که گسترش نژادی و ژنتیکی تا زبان و موسیقی و ادبیات و ... را دربرمی‌گرفت و موجب پیوندهایی میان مردمان ده‌ها اقلیم و جغرافیای گونه‌گون می‌شد که فارغ از سیاست‌های حاکمان‌شان، با یکدیگر ارتباط و دوستی و مودّت داشتند. کتاب «راه‌های ابریشم: تاریخ جدید جهان» بازنگری و هم‌گرایی «پیتر فرنکوپن» در همه‌ی روایت‌ها و تاریخ‌نگاری‌های پیشین درباره‌ی تاریخ راه ابریشم و کلیت سرگذشت آن از منظر تاریخی مختص به همه‌ی جهان است. این کتاب دوستی‌ها و روابط تجاری، ارتباطات مذهبی و نژادی، ارتباطات سیاسی و اجتماعی و جنگ‌ها و صلح‌های شکل گرفته در مسیر و متأثر از راه‌های ابریشم را موشکافانه بررسی کرده و به دانشنامه‌ی جامعی تبدیل شده که شاید پیش از این نظیرش را ندیده‌ایم.
