حادثه عاشورا منبع معرفت دینی بسیاری از روشنفکران ایرانی بوده است. حتی این واقعه بر روی کنشگران اجتماعی غیردینی نیز اثر داشته است. واقعه عاشورا جزئی از فرهنگ ایرانی شده است. نمی‌توان آن را نادیده گرفت. هرچقدر هم بر مناسک تنیده بر گرد آن خرده بگیریم، اما اصل این واقعه، از فرهنگ ایرانی جدایی‌ناپذیر است. بر دیگر اجزای فرهنگی ما ازجمله، ادبیات و موسیقی و ... هم اثرات بسیاری گذاشته است. : روحانیون بیشترین سهم را از گفتمان عاشورا داشته‌اند؛ دیگر اندیشمندان ایرانی نیز کم و بیش متأثر از این رخداد بوده‌اند. در چنین معادله‌ای سهم نواندیشان دینی از واقعه عاشورا چقدر بوده است؟ این پرسشی است که کتاب تباکی به آن پاسخ داده است.
