The fame of Samu`il Bikit as the professor of Modern literature is accepted by everybody. شهرت و اعتبار ساموئل بكت در مقام استاد ادبيات مدرن، قطعي و مورد تائيد همگان است. اما اين شهرت متكي بر آثاري است سرشار از ايهام و ايجاز و برخوردار از مضامين و اشكالي بس تكان دهنده و بي سابقه آثار بكت كه با گذشت زمان و به تبع نوعي منطق شعري، تكيده تر، مرموزتر و زيباتر شدند، به واقع مصاديق بارز اين حكم تئودور آدورنواند كه "زيبا شناسي همان تاريخ پنهان رنج است." آلوارز، در مقام شاعر، منقد و مولفي كه موضوع مشهورترين كتابش افسردگي است، صلاحيت آن را دارد كه حركت نثر بكت به سوي شعر ناب، و همچنين پيوند اين حركت با مضمون افسردگي و ياس را توصيف كند.
