Hear the Wind Sing is the first novel by Haruki Murakami, published in 1979, and marks the beginning of the literary career of one of Japan’s best-known contemporary writers. The novel first appeared in the literary magazine Gunzo before being published in book form. It is also the opening volume of the so-called “Trilogy of the Rat,” followed by Pinball, 1973 and A Wild Sheep Chase.

Set over several weeks in the summer of 1970, the novel is narrated by an unnamed young man spending his vacation in his hometown. He passes much of his time with his friend, known as the Rat, at a local bar. Memories of past relationships, an encounter with a young woman, fragmented conversations about life and loneliness, and experiences of loss form the core of the narrative. Even in this early work, Murakami introduces many of the elements that would later become characteristic of his fiction: solitary characters, incomplete relationships, music, drinking, memory, silence, and a sense of disconnection from the surrounding world.

The novel’s fragmented structure and simple, intimate tone give it the feel of personal notes or recollected memories. Beneath this apparent simplicity, however, lie recurring concerns with loneliness, loss, love, human connection, and the uncertainty of youth. In this sense, Hear the Wind Sing offers an early glimpse of the narrative style and thematic world that Murakami would develop more fully in his later fiction.

This Persian translation, published under the title Be Avaz-e Bad Gush Bespar, was translated by Mohammad Hossein Vaghef and issued by Cheshmeh Publishing. The translation is based on the English edition Wind/Pinball: Two Novels.
