Undoubtedly, one of the most brilliant features of Franz Kafka’s fiction is his ability to make the unreal appear real and to transform his dreams into reality. Yet, in what he depicts, however unreal and irrational, however dreamlike and imaginary, the reader senses that they too might find themselves in such a situation. It is through this very feeling and imagery that Kafka’s fantasies and dream-writings come to be perceived as reality.

Whether the reader approaches his works through a sociological, psychological, or religious interpretation is of secondary importance. Kafka’s fictional characters are, in essence, anonymous figures and archetypes who remain nameless, even when they are given names. Yet they seem as though they could be one of us, perhaps me, perhaps you.

Kafka is able, with remarkable simplicity, to create a space suspended between خواب and wakefulness, placing the reader on an orbit and path where each person, in their own way, identifies with the characters of his stories.

The author of this book has written the present work based on notes gathered over time while reading Kafka’s novels, short stories, letters, diaries, and aphorisms. In addition, through research into a number of German-language books on Kafka’s life and works, the author has crafted this volume and presented a series of essays to the reader. Through these essays, the reader is invited into an encounter with Kafka, and perhaps to discover a Kafka who may be at odds with, or entirely unlike, the image previously held in their mind.
