Swedes consume crime fiction the way Americans eat hamburgers. In Swedish cultural life there is a fascination with the supposedly Evil, and an attempt to understand the Evildoer on one’s own terms. And nothing is understood, because what one really wants to grasp is not the evil person but the norm-breaker. Sweden is a country where people do the right thing and pay their taxes. There is no fear of war as in other countries, but there is an anxiety about doing wrong and breaking rules; the straitjacket of the Law of Jante tightens around everyone.
The murderer therefore becomes an exciting and unpredictable figure, someone who does not do what is expected of him (because it is usually a man), but kills wildly and in the most bizarre ways. Almost all Swedes want to break free from their rigid norms and highly formal social lives. They think they understand the murderer and almost feel a murderous urge within themselves. But that is where it stops. It is merely a natural anger at being surrounded by restrictions one recognizes, and it has nothing to do with the content of this book.
So I would like to inform you Swedes that you do not possess the murderer’s qualities, and therefore you need not read any further in this book. But if you set aside the crime novels for a while and want to read about the desperation and powerlessness of real murderers, then keep chewing your way through the text that follows. You will not regret it.

Svenskarna konsumerar deckarlitteratur som amerikanarna käkar hamburgare. Det finns i svenskt kulturliv en fascination för det förment Onda och man försöker förstå den Onde efter sina egna premisser. Och man förstår ingenting, eftersom det inte är den onda människan man vill begripa utan Normbrytaren. Sverige är ett land där man gör rätt för sig och betalar skatt. Man har inte rädsla för krig som i andra länder, men ångesten att göra fel och bryta mot normer är den jantelagens tvångströja som smiter åt. Mördaren är därför en spännande och oberäknelig figur, som inte gör vad som förväntas av honom (för det är oftast en man), utan mördar hejvilt på de mest bisarra sätt. Nästan alla svenskar vill bryta mot sina rigida normer och mycket formella sociala liv. Man tror sig förstå Mördaren och nästan känner mordlusten inom sig. Men där tar det stopp, det är bara en naturlig ilska att vara kringgärdad av restriktioner man känner och det har ingenting med den här boken innehåll att göra. Så härmed vill jag informera er svenskar att ni inte har Mördarens egenskaper och därmed behöver ni inte läsa mer i denna bok. Men om ni nu ställer undan deckarna ett tag och vill läsa om de verkliga Mördarnas desperation och vanmakt så fortsätt att tugga i er texten som följer. Ni kommer inte att ångra er.
