In The House by the Sea (1881) Verga immerses himself in the local reality of a Sicilian town, Aci Trezza, and recounts the simple and quarrelsome daily life in which the Toscanos, known as the Malavoglia, live. Feeling that bourgeois realities were not very expressive, Verga tries to break the classical novelistic structure, reinventing the rules of the narrative game to give space to the chorality of the characters, portrayed in their vital specificity.
