The play that revolutionized Brazilian theater tells the story of Alaíde, a young woman who was run over by a car and, while undergoing surgery in the hospital, recalls the conflict with her sister, Lúcia, whose boyfriend Pedro she took, and imagines her encounter with Madame Clessi, a pimp murdered by her 17-year-old boyfriend. Influenced by Freud's ideas, the story is told in three planes - the real one, where she undergoes surgery and her accident is commented on by journalists, the hallucination (where Madame Clessi appears, whom Alaíde met by reading her diary) and the memory (where she remembers the love triangle with Lúcia and Pedro). The plot makes use of flashbacks, a resource that was only used in cinema at the time. Ziembinski's editing was innovative and contributed to the success of the play. The three planes of action were divided into three different floors in the setting designed by the painter Santa Rosa.
