The novel Gray Morning narrates the daily thoughts and feelings of a teenage girl in post-war Japan. Dazai deals with the reactions of this teenage girl to the events around her and what is going on in her mind and soul. The pressures of the traditional Japanese society to fit into the predetermined framework and the expectation of this closed society from a teenage girl to always be a good girl are well shown in this novel. "Grey Morning" is noted for its treatment of Japan's literary elite in the post-war era, as well as for Dazai's ironic and inventive use of language.

رمان صبح خاکستری روایت‌گر افکار و احساسات روزمره‌ی دختر نوجوانی در ژاپن پس از جنگ است. دازای هم به واکنش‌های این دختر نوجوان به رویداد‌های اطرافش می‌پردازد و هم به آنچه در ذهن و روحش در جریان است. فشارهای جامعه‌ی سنتی ژاپن برای قرارگرفتن در چهارچوب‌های از پیش تعیین‌شده و توقع این جامعه‌ی بسته از دختری نوجوان برای اینکه همواره دختر خوبی باشد به‌خوبی در این رمان نشان داده شده‌اند. «صبح خاکستری» به‌خاطر اینکه به نخبگان ادبی ژاپن در دوران پس از جنگ می‌پردازد و همچنین به دلیل استفاده‌ی طعنه‌آمیز و مبتکرانه‌ی دازای از زبان شهرت یافت.
