Renst Nolte was a German historian and philosopher. Nolte's main interest was comparative studies of fascism and communism. Originally trained in philosophy, he was a Distinguished Professor of Modern History at the Free University of Berlin, where he taught from 1973 until his retirement in 1991. Previously, he was a professor at the University of Marburg from 1965 to 1973. He is best known for his seminal work, Fascism in Its Age, which was widely acclaimed when it was published in 1963. Nolte has been a prominent conservative university since the early 1960s and has been involved in many controversies regarding the interpretation of the history of fascism and communism, including the Historikerstreit in the late 1980s. In the fun years, Nolte focused on Islamism and "Islamic fascism". Nolte received several awards, including the Hans-Martin Schleier Award and the Konrad Adenauer Award. He was the father of the legal scientist and judge of the International Court of Justice Georg Nolte. All of Nolte's historical works are heavily influenced by German philosophical traditions. In particular, Nolte seeks to find the themes of the "colonial phenomenon" of history and discover the grand ideas that motivate all of history. In this way, Nolte's work is directed towards generalities instead of specific characteristics of a specific time period. Now, his book "Twentieth Century" should be discussed from this kind of perspective.
