While the connection of theater with a wide range of institutions and human contexts is easily accepted by most readers, since long ago, especially among theater scholars themselves, the assumption that Islam as a religion was fundamentally opposed to the theater has always existed. With the beginning of the 21st century, theater and Islam, which had found commonalities in other times and situations, moved towards separation and, especially in the more extreme parts of the Sunni world, took on completely opposite roles. However, this gap is not so great in the Shiite world, where religious performance led by Ta'ziyya still has a large following, as religious culture has historically been more flexible towards theatrical activities - in part due to the moderating influence of Sufism.
