This book, written by John Foran and translated by Ahmad Tedin, is one of the important books on Iranian issues, which traces the evolution of Iran's social structure from the efficiency of the Safavid dynasty to the social movements of the 20th century. With regard to the current discussions of the sociology of development, Foran presents a new assessment of Iran's confrontation with the West in the light of a range of social science theories, including global systems, dependence, and political culture. Foran believes that Iran's 1357 revolution can only be understood in the light of studying Iran's history.

این کتاب به قلم جان فوران و ترجمه احمد تدین یکی از کتاب‌های مهم مسائل ایران است که تحولات ساختار اجتماعی ایران را از روی کارآمدن خاندان صفویه تا جنبشهای اجتماعی قرن بیستم ردیابی می کند. فوران با توجه به مباحث جاری جامعه شناسی توسعه، ارزیابی جدیدی از رویارویی ایران با غرب در پرتو طیفی از نظریه های علوم اجتماعی و ازجمله نظامهای جهانی، وابستگی و فرهنگ سیاسی ارائه می نماید. فوران معتقد است، انقلاب 1357 ایران تنها در پرتو مطالعه تاریخ ایران قابل درک خواهد بود.
