Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley is one of the most influential works in world literature and a foundational text in both Gothic fiction and science fiction. Shelley began writing this novel when she was only eighteen years old, creating a story that is at once terrifying, philosophical, and profoundly human.

The novel follows Victor Frankenstein, a young and ambitious scientist who seeks to uncover the secret of life by creating a living being from the remains of the dead. However, when he confronts the creature he has brought into existence, he is overcome by fear and regret. The creature, who initially longs for affection and companionship, is gradually driven toward anger and revenge as a result of rejection, isolation, and human cruelty.

More than a horror story, Frankenstein raises profound questions about human responsibility toward one’s creations, the limits of scientific ambition, and the meaning of being human. Through the conflict between creator and creation, Mary Shelley suggests that the true danger lies not only in the power of science itself, but also in humanity’s irresponsibility and inability to accept the consequences of its actions.

As one of the key works that shaped the development of horror and science fiction, Frankenstein remains deeply relevant in the modern world, engaging with contemporary issues such as genetic engineering, emerging technologies, and the ethics of scientific progress. It continues to be recognized as one of the most significant classics of global literature.
