با وجود كاربرد گسترده ي مفهوم پوپوليسم در ادبيات سياسي، درك جامعي از آن وجود ندارد. و علوم اجتماعي نيز توجه زيادي به آن نشان نداده است. نويسنده با بررسي خود به اين نتيجه مي رسد كه بسياري از محققان، پوپوليسم را در شرايطي مشخص بررسي كرده اند. وي با بررسي تعاريف و ديدگاههاي مختلف و ارائه ي تعريفي جديد از پوپوليسم، چشم انداز تازه اي را براي درك سياستهاي رهبران و حكومتهاي پوپوليستي در سرار جهان مي گشايد.
