اين رساله فصلي از دفتر نخست پژوهش مفصلي درباره تاريخ انديشه سياسي در ايران است كه در سه مجلد به چاپ خواهد رسيد. در آغاز سده هاي ميانه، مذهب مختار در انديشه سياسي، انديشه مستند به كتاب و سنت مسيحي، انديشه جدايي دين و دولت بود و نظريه ولايت مطلقه ي پاپ و كليسا كه در تاريخ انديشه سياسي از آن به theocracy تعبير شده، و برتري مرجعيت روحاني بر اقتدار سياسي شاه و امپراتور، نظريه اي بسيار متاخر در تاريخ انديشه سياسي سده هاي ميانه است.
