This volume is an anthology of selected pieces of poetry and prose that deeply offend longestablished standards of morality in Iran. It begins with a detailed instroduction to the forbidden in Persian as well as in Arabic- both classical and modern. It then presents unprintables from the works of eight of the most important writers of Persian literature. Thus, for the first time in English, readers can sample unbowdlerized versions of censored poetry by two of the greatest Persian mystics, Sanai of Ghazni (12th century); and Jalal al-Din Rumi (13th century); by the inspired parodists and cursers, Suzani of Samarkand (12th century) and Obayd-e Zakani (14th century); and by the acknowledged master of classical prose and poetry, Sadi of Shiraz (13th century). The anthology also contains off-color quatrains by a contemporary of Omar Khayyam, the poetess Mahsati of Ganja, and an epic invective by the modern poet Iraj Mirza (d. 1926).
