Inherent Vice is a postmodern detective novel by Thomas Pynchon, first published in 2009. Set in Los Angeles in 1970, it follows Larry “Doc” Sportello, a stoner private investigator navigating a psychedelic maze of conspiracy, paranoia, and cultural decay. The novel’s layered critique of American society, capitalist corruption, and existential absurdity. Pynchon’s signature style—dense, ironic, and richly allusive—is preserved in Behrang Shirinzadeh’s translation, which renders the novel accessible to Persian readers while retaining its linguistic complexity.
