This work articulates Schuon's thought and work around two complementary aspects of the sapiential doctrine: on the one hand, pure metaphysics, of a principled and speculative order; on the other hand, the properly operative, spiritual, and initiatory side. Schuon reminds us that the human condition finds its reason for being in its very purpose: the intellectual knowledge of the transcendent Real, in other words, the Absolute, God, actualized by intellectual and spiritual disciplines. Similarly, he restores to the entire cosmos its metaphysical transparency, its theophanic dimension, leading us to perceive divine Reality through the "signs" and "traces" that manifest it.

این اثر، اندیشه و کار شوون را حول دو جنبه مکمل دکترین خردمند بیان می‌کند: از یک سو، متافیزیک ناب، با نظمی اصولی و نظری. از سوی دیگر، سمت درست عملیاتی، معنوی و آغازگر. شوون به ما یادآوری می‌کند که شرایط انسانی دلیل وجودی خود را در هدف خود می‌یابد: معرفت فکری واقعیت متعالی، به عبارت دیگر، مطلق، خدا، که توسط رشته‌های فکری و معنوی به فعلیت می‌رسد. به همین ترتیب، شفافیت مابعدالطبیعی و بعد الهیات خود را به کل جهان باز می‌گرداند و ما را به درک واقعیت الهی از طریق «نشانه‌ها» و «ردپایی» که آن را آشکار می‌کند هدایت می‌کند.
